The 2026-27 NHL season is set to begin with a bang, kicking off on September 29th with a tripleheader of games. The opening night will feature a highly anticipated match-up between the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Carolina Hurricanes, and their rivals, the Florida Panthers. This game will take place in Raleigh, with the Hurricanes raising their championship banner in front of the Panthers, who were also champions in 2024 and 2025. The tripleheader will continue with the Boston Bruins hosting the New York Rangers, followed by the Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights facing off against the Chicago Blackhawks. The night will also see a doubleheader in Canada, with the Toronto Maple Leafs taking on the Montreal Canadiens, potentially marking the NHL debut of Gavin McKenna, the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The Edmonton Oilers, under new coach Mike Babcock, will host the Vancouver Canucks, and the Pittsburgh Penguins, led by Sidney Crosby, will face off against the Philadelphia Flyers in a rematch of the 2026 Eastern Conference First Round. The Los Angeles Kings, with Artemi Panarin, will play against Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche. The Panthers will also see the debut of Brady Tkachuk, who was traded to Florida by the Ottawa Senators. Other notable home openers include Alex Ovechkin's 22nd and potentially final home opener for the Washington Capitals, and the New York Islanders' match-up against the New Jersey Devils. The season will also feature several special signature events, including the 2026 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic, the 2026 Global Series Finland, the 2026 Global Series Germany, the Discover NHL Winter Classic, the Honda NHL All-Star Weekend, and the 2027 Navy Federal Credit Union Stadium Series. The complete regular-season schedule will be unveiled on Thursday, with a special edition of 'NHL Tonight' hosted by Jamison Coyle, Mike Rupp, and E.J. Hradek.
